Chevening Scholarship: Application Guide

Chevening Scholarship: Application Guide

Chevening is the UK's fully funded master's scholarship for future leaders — tuition, £1,300/month stipend, flights and visa covered. It opens once a year (usually August to November). Here's how to approach it.

Eligibility checklist

The 4 essays (the real battle)

Chevening's application is 4 essays, and they decide everything:

1. Leadership and influence — a real example where you led and created change. Use STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

2. Networking — how you build and maintain professional relationships across borders and sectors.

3. Career plan — a specific, credible 5-year plan. Vague plans ("I want to help my country") fail.

4. Why Chevening, why the UK — connect your plan to specific UK courses and the Chevening network.

Each essay has a word limit — use every word. Generic essays are the #1 rejection reason.

Interview tips

The interview tests the same 4 themes as the essays. Prepare 2-3 concrete stories for each. Be honest about weaknesses — interviewers respect self-awareness. Know your 3 course choices deeply: why each university, which modules, which professors.

Start preparing essays at least 6 weeks before the deadline. See also: How to Write a Winning SOP.
